What Works Well

• Stunning World & Presentation The snow-laden forests, crisp lighting, and environmental details make Ezo feel alive and immersive. The game also leans into cinematic direction, with multiple visual/audio “modes” (e.g. Kurosawa, Miike, Watanabe) that let you reframe the tone of your journey. 
• Strong Protagonist & Focused Story Playing as Atsu, whose family was slaughtered when she was a child, makes for a more grounded and emotionally immediate narrative than many grandiose revenge plots. Her mission is clear: hunt down the “Yōtei Six.” While some beats feel familiar, the execution keeps you invested. 
• Refined Combat & Systems The core systems from Tsushima (stealth, swordplay, exploration) return but are polished further. Gadgets, weapon switching, stealth assassinations, and open approaches give flexibility. The game supports multiple playstyles and encourages you to take your time. 
• Freedom & Pacing The devs explicitly state the game “won’t rush you through anything,” and the world is filled with side content, clues, and optional paths to engage as you see fit.  Also, the flow from mission to mission often feels smooth; you rarely find yourself stuck by rigid structure. 

What Holds It Back

• Side Quests & Repetition Though many side missions are well made, some fall into typical open-world filler—fetch quests, clearing camps, etc. These could feel rote in contrast to the main narrative. 
• Camera & Combat Edge Cases Occasionally, the camera can lag behind or lose track of fast-moving foes or projectiles mid-combat. In high intensity situations, that can break immersion.  Also, while combat is polished, it’s not drastically different from the familiar formula—so if you hated certain combat tropes in Tsushima, those may persist here. 
• Pacing & Narrative Flow Some critics have pointed out that the story slows in parts, especially during transitions between the main vendetta missions. Some narrative lulls and predictable turns are present. 

Overall Verdict

Ghost of Yōtei is a standout in 2025’s lineup. It’s not perfect—but it is ambitious, beautiful, and largely succeeds at delivering a compelling experience. For fans of samurai action, cinematic worlds, or revenge dramas, this is a title well worth your time.
